What is Birth Trauma

Birth trauma occurs when a woman experiences birth as a frightening, traumatic and negative experience. It is not caused by any particular ‘type’ of birth, but by how the woman felt during her birth.

Often women who have found their birth traumatic will have feared for their, their baby’s or their partner’s life. This could be because the birth suddenly took an unexpected turn, and medical interventions became necessary. Especially if it felt that the situation or options available were not properly explained or if what was happening was completely out of their control.

Women who feel they have had a traumatic birth often feel like labour went on for so long it felt endless, and something they could not ‘get away from’.

Sometimes other people might say that the woman seems to have had the ‘perfect birth’, or that it wasn’t too bad, or too long, but the woman still feels traumatised. This can be due to how she was treated in labour. Feeling powerless, or that you are not being listened to or are out of control can result in a woman feeling traumatised. Having a poor relationship with the midwife or medical professionals can also result in trauma.

What are the Symptoms of Birth Trauma?

The symptoms of birth trauma can vary, but can include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, guilt, anger, sadness, depression, tearfulness, feeling of distance from life, difficulty bonding with the baby, difficulty relating to partner.

Sometimes women will feel ‘ok’ about their birth, until they become pregnant a second time, and the reality of going through labour again brings the feelings they had during their previous birth to the surface.

Women might feel they do not want to have another child, for fear of having to go through the experience again.

What Treatment is Available?

Birth Debriefing session: – This one-to-one session, in the comfort of your own home, can provide a safe space to tell your story. I will offer a non-judgemental listening ear, and allow you to talk in as much detail as you feel comfortable about you birth. This is the first step to understanding what happened and what course of further action to take, if appropriate.
Fee: – £60 per session

Rewind technique – The rewind technique is a very effective and well tested technique that neutralises the disturbing feelings associated with birth trauma. The memory of what happened still exists but it no longer provokes anxiety, panic, guilt, anger or sadness allowing the person to move forward with their life. It involves at least two sessions, at your home, during which we would talk through your birth experience, and how you would like to feel instead, and then a deep relaxation session during which I would use the rewind technique. For more details about the technique, please visit traumatic birth recovery
Fee: – £150

Doula:- I am available to support you through your pregnancy, labour and birth, as your doula. Having someone with you who understands what has happened previously, and what sort of things bring back your traumatic memories, and knows what you want to be different this time, really can help. Please have a look at my other pages if you would like to find out more about how I could support you.

Please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions or would like any further information.
